You want the plan built on this family’s own numbers, so check what Hazel already holds for the household before you hand it more.

What your connected systems keep current

No sync writes a balance or a holding into the profile, so accounts held anywhere other than Altruist reach a plan through a statement you upload. Integrations shows what connects today.
Hazel builds a household’s profile from four kinds of material: a document, a recorded meeting, a client email, or a note, written in Hazel or in the CRM Hazel syncs from. A household that syncs cleanly but has never been met with and holds no documents has nothing financial in its profile yet.

What you upload

The household’s Documents tab. Hazel reads the file into the household’s profile, where every plan for that household can use it. The plan’s own chat. Attach a file and Hazel reads it for that plan. It does not become a profile fact, so put a copy on the Documents tab when later plans need it.

Worth uploading, in priority order

What Hazel can read

Multi-account statements, multi-year returns and long policy documents are all fine, and so are scans and photographs, because Hazel reads the text inside the image. The limits:
  • 50 MB a file. A very large or complex scan can also run out of time, and the row asks you to split it and upload the parts.
  • PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX) and images. Save an older .doc or .xls as .docx or .xlsx first, and export a spreadsheet as .xlsx rather than CSV.
  • A password-protected PDF is fine. Hazel asks you for the password as the file uploads and unlocks it in your browser.
Drag files, or whole folders, anywhere onto the Documents tab.

After you upload

The pill on each row shows how far Hazel has got:
  • Queued, then Reading while Hazel pulls the text out, with a page count.
  • Waiting for profile, then Adding to profile. Hazel adds documents to a household one at a time.
  • In profile. Select the pill to see what Hazel learned.
  • Failed. Nothing usable came out, and the row says why.
Most documents take a few minutes. A build reads the household’s facts at the moment it starts, so wait for In profile, or anything still reading misses that plan.

When two sources disagree

A household can hold two versions of the same fact: a CRM note from March, a statement from last week. Hazel does not average them; the newer source wins. Where the numbers come from has the detail.

How much data is enough

The household’s Financial Planning tab answers that before you build, on a card headed Financial Plan document readiness. The line under each row says what is missing: “3 documents, none read yet”. Getting started has the eight rows and the two cards they decide.
  • A tick needs the source to be current, not only present. Accounts count when they were updated in the last 90 days, tax documents when the latest filing is inside 18 months. A row can read Incomplete on a household you know has accounts.
  • Accounts & Holdings reads the household’s profile, so an Altruist connection on its own does not tick it. A tax return counts for both Tax documents and Uploaded documents, so one upload can move two rows.
Where Hazel has no household figure, a dated standard assumption is used or the figure is marked Unknown, and the plan labels both. The readiness list, not the plan, names the document that would fill the gap.
Read the eight checks, then open Prepare data on the same tab. Step one is a drop zone. Step two drafts an email asking the household for the rest, with the missing items listed and your next meeting date in the subject, ready to send from your own mailbox. Then build from what you have. When the documents arrive, upload them and press Regenerate in the plan’s top bar on the Financial Planning tab.
Once a plan on this household is ready, the tab shows it in place of the readiness card.
