Welcome to Hazel!
You’re about two minutes away from having an AI partner that knows your clients, preps your meetings, drafts your emails, and keeps your day organized. Here’s the idea: Hazel pulls together everything scattered across your CRM, inbox, calendar, and custodial accounts, and turns it into one clear, conversational view of what matters right now. Ask a question in plain English—“What should I know before my 2pm with the Garcias?”—and Hazel answers with the full picture. This guide walks you through setup and your first few minutes in the app. Let’s get you running. Were you invited by your firm? A couple of these steps (choosing a plan and adding payment) are handled by your firm’s Owner, so you’ll breeze right past them. Everything else is the same.
Setting up Hazel
When you first sign in—with your work email (Google or Microsoft) or Altruist single sign-on—Hazel greets you and walks you through a short setup. You can move Back and Next at any point, and skip the optional steps.1
Get started
Hazel says hello and lets you know setup takes about two minutes. Click Get started to begin.
2
Tell Hazel how it can help
On “How can Hazel help you?”, pick the experience that fits your firm:
- Admin AI — draft emails, summarize documents, answer questions, and tackle daily tasks, all informed by your CRM, custodial data, and notes.
- Tax Planning + Admin AI — everything in Admin AI, plus AI-powered tax analysis. Upload 1040s, paystubs, and statements to generate personalized tax strategies.
3
Connect your tools
This is where Hazel comes alive. Connect your email & calendar, your CRM, and (for Altruist firms) your custodian. The more you connect, the more Hazel can do. See Connecting your tools below for the details—or click Skip and connect later.
4
Pick your plan
Choose Admin AI or Admin AI + Tax Planning, and Monthly or Annually (annual saves the most). You won’t be charged until your trial ends, and you can cancel anytime. See current rates on the pricing page.
5
Start your free trial
Add a payment method to start your 14-day free trial. You won’t be charged until the trial ends—and your card is handled securely.
6
Invite your team (optional)
Bring in your colleagues by email and give each person a role (Advisor or Owner). You can also turn on the Tax Planning add-on per person. Not ready? Skip it—you can invite anyone later from Settings.
7
Done!
Hazel takes a moment to set up your workspace, then drops you straight into the app. That’s it—you’re in.
Connecting your tools
Connecting your tools is the single most valuable thing you’ll do—it’s what lets Hazel work from your clients and your day instead of starting from a blank page.Your data is safe. Hazel does not train AI models on your data. When data is shared with AI providers to do work for you, it’s covered by strict no-training and data-retention controls, and Hazel is AICPA/SOC certified. Learn more about Hazel’s security.

Email & calendar
Connect Google or Microsoft and Hazel can:- Prep you for every meeting with agendas and the relevant client context.
- Draft replies in your voice, ready for your review.
- Keep your daily priorities current.
Signed in with Google or Microsoft SSO? The first time you log in, Hazel automatically prompts you to connect the calendar for the same account you signed in with — no need to navigate to Settings. The consent screen is pre-filled with your SSO email, so you can approve it in one click. If you dismiss the prompt, Hazel won’t ask again. You can connect your calendar later from Settings → Integrations, but features like meeting prep, agendas, and daily priorities will be limited until you do.
CRM
Your CRM is your client memory—connecting it lets Hazel surface client history in seconds and sync notes and tasks back automatically.- Click your CRM to connect it. Most use a quick, secure sign-in; Redtail asks for your Redtail username and password.
- Hazel imports your contacts, notes, and tasks. The first import can take a little while (you’ll see a “Syncing… may take 10-15 min” note), then Hazel keeps up automatically.
You can connect one CRM at a time. Once you connect one, the others are disabled—your CRM is your single source of truth for client data. More on CRM integrations →
Custodian (Altruist)
If your firm uses Altruist, connect it to ask Hazel about balances, holdings, recent changes, transactions, and cost basis—answered from the latest account data. You’ll review a short Data Access Consent screen and click Agree & Connect. Access is read-only (Hazel can never trade or move money), nothing is stored, and you can disconnect anytime from Settings.Your first few minutes in Hazel
