You want this plan to treat Roth conversion on its own, so you add that module instead of building it block by block. One move brings the year-by-year conversion schedule and the bracket work.

The two shapes

Five of Hazel’s modules are a whole tab: Cash flow, Retirement, Insurance, Investments, Estate plan. Adding one creates that tab inside Getting there with the blocks that belong in it, and a Tab badge marks them in the library. The other fourteen add their pieces inside a section or tab, the way Net worth & balance sheet goes into Today. Each module’s card names its default home, and you can move it once it lands.

Finding what you can add

Open the editor with Design layout, then the Modules tab in the left rail, or from Settings → Planning, See what’s left out on the Plan layout card. Hazel’s nineteen modules are grouped by planning area, with your firm’s own underneath. Use it to audit a design you inherited:
  • Modules in the design carry an In plan badge, counted in each group header (“4 of 6 in plan”), and offer Jump to it in place of an add button.
  • The Not in plan chip filters down to what you are missing; Search modules… finds one by name.
  • A module you do not have names its landing spot: “Adds to the Cash flow tab”, or “Adds to the Retirement tab (creates it)” when that tab is not in your design yet.
  • Brings lists the pieces the module carries; Preview draws their shapes.

Adding a module

Choose Add to plan on the module’s card. Hazel drops it in, scrolls to it, and names where it landed in a message with an Undo. It arrives set to When it applies, so Hazel includes it only when the household’s facts call for it. For a topic every plan should cover, use the chevron beside Add to plan for the always-include option, or switch it later from the module’s row in the Outline. On Flexible strictness, where a new firm starts, Always is a strong preference rather than a rule. See Strictness. If the tab already exists, a dialog headed Already in this design offers Add it there or Create a second one, so you cannot end up with two Retirement tabs by accident. If an earlier add left that tab empty, the button offers to furnish it. Your firm’s own modules follow your selection, since a custom module has no default home: a blocks module joins the tab or section you have selected, and an own-section module becomes a tab of the top-level section your selection sits inside. With nothing selected, a blocks module falls into the plan’s first section. Hazel’s own nineteen ignore your selection.

Removing a module

Open the small icon at the left of a module’s Outline row and choose Remove from plan…. For a tab module, that row is the tab itself, and the same action sits behind the more-actions button on the module’s card. A tab a module owns has no trash can, so the menu is its only way out. A removal takes the module’s untouched pieces, plus any other module living inside a tab it owned. Hazel names everything that went and says which edited pieces it kept. If you had edited the module’s blocks, Hazel asks first, under Save as a custom module first?: Save & remove files your version in your firm’s library under a name you choose, or Remove without saving, or Cancel.

What leaving one out means

A module that is not in your layout means no dedicated treatment of that topic, not that the topic is banned. Broader modules still fold narrower ones in: with Roth conversion absent, a retirement or tax section can name a conversion opportunity in passing, but no year-by-year conversion schedule of its own. It runs the other way too: add Retirement income sequencing and the sequencing story moves out of the general retirement narrative into a treatment of its own.

Modules of your own

Build one when your firm has a treatment of its own, like a section your compliance review requires. New module… sits at the bottom of the Modules tab and asks for:
  • Name and Description, both shown on the module’s card.
  • How it appears in the plan: Its own section, which becomes a tab, or Adds blocks to sections, one block joining a section or tab already there.
  • Instructions to Hazel: what this module should cover whenever it appears.
  • Start from: Let Hazel write it leaves the tab empty and has Hazel compose it from your instructions every time. Copy existing starts from another module’s blocks. Design now puts it in the design to shape by hand. The blocks shape offers the last two only.
Create module files it in your firm’s library right away, available on the base template and every persona. Under Let Hazel write it or Copy existing it waits there until you Add to plan.

Choosing what to enable

Add the specialists your clients need, like equity compensation for technology employees or education funding for school-age families, then stop: every module you add is another section a client crosses to reach the decision. When only some of your clients need a module, add it to the persona that covers them, not the base template. See Inheritance and re-syncing.
