# Getting Started

## Before you start

Intelligent Client Profiles build themselves from your everyday workflows, so there's nothing to configure. Two things determine how quickly they fill in:

1. **Your sources of client information.** Profiles learn from meetings recorded by the [Hazel notetaker](/guides/meeting-assistant/overview/how-it-works), email and CRM connected in **Settings → Integrations**, client documents you upload, and the notes you write in Hazel. Any one of these sources help build your profiles and the more sources you include, the richer the profile.
2. **Your clients in Hazel.** Facts are filed under your Households and Contacts, so the people you meet with need to exist as contacts (Households and Contacts typically sync from a connected CRM, but you can also create them in Hazel).

## Finding the profile

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open a household or person">
    Click **Contacts** in the Hazel sidebar, pick a household from the **Households** list (or a person under **People**), and open it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Look at the tab bar">
    A household page shows **Summary · Meetings · Tasks · Emails · Notes · Documents · Data**. The profile lives across three of these: **Summary** (the narrative view), **Documents** (files Hazel has read), and **Data** (every fact Hazel has collected, with sources). Individual client pages have Documents and Data tabs, but no Summary tab.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  A useful way to think about the three: **Summary** is where you *read* the profile, **Documents** is where you *feed* it, and **Data** is where you *maintain* it.
</Tip>

## The Summary tab: your household at a glance

The Summary tab is the profile turned into prose, designed to get you current on a household in about a minute.

* **Summary** is a narrative Hazel writes for each the profile. Phrases with citations are underlined: Click one to see exactly which meeting, email, or document the statement came from. The summary narrative refreshes itself as new facts arrive.
* **Tasks** and **Meetings** list the household's open work and recent meetings, in place.
* **About Household** covers key dates, a **Goals** card (each goal as it was recorded), and a card for each member with a short bio Hazel maintains.
* **Ask Hazel**, the chat rail on the right of each profile, come prepared to help answer specific questions about each household. Ask anything, and Hazel will draw on data from the profile to answer. It works in both directions: If you want to manually add an update to a profile, you can tell Hazel what's changed ("they sold the rental in June"), review the updates Hazel lays out, and confirm.

Next to the household's name you'll also see a small **Data Verification** ring showing how much of the profile you've confirmed. Click it to review new information without leaving the page.

## Your first visit

If Hazel hasn't processed anything for a client yet, the Data tab shows:

> **No household data yet.** "Hazel builds this page from the household's meetings, emails, and uploaded documents. Once a meeting is recorded or an email is synced, the facts Hazel extracts land here — every value with its source."

That's normal. Here are four ways to start building data into a profile, in order of speed:

1. **Upload a document.** Drop a statement, tax return, or account document on the **Documents** tab. Facts usually land within minutes.
2. **Tell Hazel.** In Ask Hazel, describe what you already know about the client (accounts, goals, family), review what Hazel proposes to add, and confirm.
3. **Record your next meeting** with the Hazel's notetaker. Facts appear in the corresponding household profile shortly after your meeting notes are ready.
4. **Connect email**, and facts arrive as clients write to you.

Then spend five minutes in **Data → Review** confirming what Hazel found. See [Managing Client Data](/guides/intelligent-client-profiles/managing-client-data).

## Who can see and change a profile

Profiles follow the same access rules as the rest of a client's record in Hazel:

* **If you can open the client, you can read their profile.** The household Data tab covers every member, so it requires access to the whole household.
* **If you can edit the client, you can maintain their profile**: verify, correct, archive, upload and delete documents.
* **Owners** can see and manage every client's profile, as they can everywhere in Hazel. The Admin role by itself manages firm settings, not client data.
* **There's one shared profile per client**, no private copies. A teammate's verifications and corrections are visible to you, and yours to them, so shared clients get one clean record instead of competing versions. Clients never see their profile; it's internal to your firm.
