# Where every number comes from

> Trace any figure back to its sources, calculation and assumptions, and audit a plan before you present it.

You are going to put these numbers in front of a client, so you need to know where each came from. Most figures carry their own audit trail.

## Selecting a figure

A figure with something recorded behind it carries a dotted underline. Select it and the **Provenance and calculations** panel slides in from the right. Hover first for a tooltip: "How this was calculated" where there is math behind it, "Where this figure comes from" where there is only a source.

No underline means nothing was recorded, or another control owns the click. Where one you need will not open, the **Appendix** lists every recorded figure.

Tiles in a **Key numbers** row carry a small source icon, opening a short version with confidence and source rows and a **View calculations** link to the full panel.

## What the panel contains

| Section         | What it shows                                                                                                                                               |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Sources** | A **Source / Confidence / Value** table, one row per input. A linkable document becomes a link; where the household said it, the row carries their words |
| **Methodology** | The calculation step by step: the formula in words, then the same formula with this household's figures and the result. Traced inputs name their source row |
| **Assumptions** | What the figure rests on, numbered A1, A2 and so on, each a sentence rather than a value |

Methodology and Assumptions appear only where Hazel recorded them, and where nothing was recorded the panel says so. **View full breakdown**, at the top, opens the **Appendix**.

## The three confidence labels

| Label          | What it means                                                                                                                                                                                                                         |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Verified** | A document established it, you entered or corrected it yourself, or the household said it about themselves and what they want, which Hazel treats as settled once said |
| **Unverified** | Hazel captured it, but nobody confirmed it. Mostly money: a balance someone mentioned, an income figure in an email. Check it before you present it |
| **Modeled** | Nobody stated it. The plan worked it out from figures it does have, or fell back on a standard assumption because the household had none; Methodology and Assumptions tell you which. Fine on the future; on today, find the document |

Unknown is a further case: nothing could source the figure at all. Confidence is not printed beside figures in the plan's prose.

<Note>
  Confirm a fact in the household's profile, not in the plan: settle it in the [profile review queue](/guides/intelligent-client-profiles/managing-client-data/reviewing-and-verifying) and rebuild, and the source reads verified next time.
</Note>

## Changing an assumption from the panel

A figure cannot be typed over. Change what produced it instead.

An assumption you can change for this plan carries an **Edit** button: selecting it opens the sentence for rewriting, and **Queue change** adds it to the recalculation queue. Nothing recalculates yet: the bar at the bottom of the plan counts what is waiting, and **Recalculate** sends the lot to Hazel in one pass. See [Editing a plan directly](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/editing-a-plan-directly).

An assumption with no **Edit** button is fixed for this plan. One that will not open says why on hover: "Requires plan recalculation" where the plan cannot be recalculated from where you are reading it, "Past plan versions are read-only" on an earlier version.

## Auditing the whole plan

**Appendix.** The last entry in the plan's left rail. Near the top, **Applied settings** names the Client persona Hazel matched and the market scenario the projections drew from, then tables of **Solver assumptions**, **Planning assumptions** and **Market assumptions** under **Setting / Value / Set by**. A footnote says market rows nobody changed follow the scenario's published values. Below that, a card per figure.

**Plan settings.** The sliders icon in the plan's top bar when you open a plan from its chat. It shows this plan's effective **Solver assumptions** and **Market assumptions**, each labeled with the layer that set it, and lets you change those that can vary by household. See [Solver assumptions](/guides/financial-planning/assumptions/solver-assumptions).

<Note>
  Plan settings and the figure panel share the same dock, so opening one closes the other. The household **Financial Planning** tab has no sliders icon: select **Open chat** in its top bar to reach the panel.
</Note>

## Which layer set a setting

| Label         | What it means                                                                                   |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Firm** | Your firm's default, set in Settings, then Planning |
| **Persona** | The matched Client persona's override of the firm default. The label carries the persona's name |
| **This plan** | An override set on this plan, for this household only |

In Plan settings, a reset plan-level override reads **Inherited** until you apply.

<Note>
  Three inputs cannot vary by household: **Advisory fee**, **Terminal heir tax rate** and **Monte Carlo simulations**. They are not in the Plan settings panel, but Applied settings lists all three, marked **Firm**.
</Note>

## Display rules clients ask about

* **Displayed probability of success is capped.** Above the ceiling, the figure reads as greater than the ceiling, and a line beneath names the ceiling and says the cap applied. The ceiling starts at 99% and is a firm-level setting, so read that line rather than assuming 99%. At 100% the cap is off and a plan prints a flat 100%.
* **A range of outcomes stays a range.** Where the plan models market paths, the **Range of outcomes** chart draws an outer band for the 10th to 90th percentile, an inner band for the 25th to 75th, and a median line. Point a client at the bands, not the median.

## Before you present a plan

<Steps>
  <Step title="Read Plan orientation">
    The info button on the plan's top bar. Its closing **Start here** bullet names what to resolve with the client first. The panel stamps the version the brief was written for, which can be earlier than the one on screen; with no brief, there is no info button.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the matched persona">
    Open the **Appendix** and read the **Persona** row at the top of Applied settings. "None" means nothing fitted, so Hazel built on your base template alone. Where it is wrong, do not present the plan: ask Hazel to rebuild against the persona you want, by name. In chat, **Edit** in the top bar opens that conversation; on the household **Financial Planning** tab, select **Open chat** first. There is no persona picker on the plan itself.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the figures you will lead with">
    The figure on the plan's success gauge, one balance-sheet figure and one income figure. Read the methodology and assumptions, and confirm the source rows name something you trust and read verified. A document row names the source, not the date of the figure inside, so open the document yourself where currency matters.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Look for unverified sources on anything you will quote">
    Every figure's card in the Appendix carries the same Confidence column. Confirm an unverified figure with the client and settle it in the profile, or drop the claim.
  </Step>
</Steps>
