# Anatomy of a plan

> What each part of a plan does: the rail, the five sections, the top bar on both surfaces, the Appendix, plan settings, the staging bar, and feedback.

You are going to walk a client through one long document, so you need to know what each part does and which controls you get where.

## The navigation rail

Above the section list, the rail carries the plan's name, the household with its members, and the date the plan was written. Selecting a section scrolls to it and expands it. **Appendix** sits apart below the list.

## The five default sections

| Section | What it holds |
| ----------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Summary** | The narrative opening, four headline figures, and the success gauge: paired rings comparing the chance of success as things stand with the chance once the plan's recommendations are in place |
| **Today** | Where the household stands now: net worth, the balance sheet, account-level detail |
| **Goals** | One card per goal, with its funding status and progress toward the target |
| **Getting there** | The analysis itself, split across tabs |
| **Decisions** | What Hazel would do first, and the log of what you approved or ignored |

Your firm can change this shape in [Plan design](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/overview), and each Client persona can carry one of its own, so a plan may not have all five sections.

### Getting there and its tabs

Most of the plan lives here, usually leading with **Your priorities**: one card per priority Hazel ranked for this household. Select a card and its detail opens underneath: the recommendation, the figures behind it, and the dials that move it.

The tabs after that come from the modules your firm has enabled: **Cash flow**, **Retirement** and **Insurance** out of the box, with **Investments** and **Estate plan** once your firm adds them. See [Modules](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/modules).

## The top bar

On the left: the plan's title, the version you are reading, and an **N unsaved** badge whenever you have staged work. The controls on the right depend on where the plan is open, in **Ask Hazel** or on a household's **Financial Planning** tab.

| Control | What it does | Where |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| **Plan version** | Steps back and forward through the plan's history, reading as "V3 (2 of 4)". An older version is read-only, under a banner with **Back to latest**. One version means a plain badge and no arrows. [Versions and regenerating](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/versions-and-regenerating) | Both |
| **Plan orientation** | The info button opens a short generated brief: the household's situation and what the plan concludes, the trade-offs the analysis weighs, where the goals stand, up to four recommendations with their figures, and a closing **Start here** line naming what to settle with the client first | Both |
| **Export PDF** | Turns the version on screen into the client-ready PDF, older versions included. Grayed out while you have unsaved changes, with a tooltip telling you to save or discard first. [Sharing and delivering](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/sharing-and-delivering) | Both |
| **Edit** | Opens the conversation with Hazel about this plan, under the tooltip "Ask Hazel to change this plan". There is no editing mode to switch on. [Changing a plan with chat](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/changing-a-plan-with-chat) | Ask Hazel |
| **Plan settings** | This plan's own assumptions, with the few you can override for one household. Covered below | Ask Hazel |
| **Planning settings** | The gear beside it leaves the plan for your firm's planning settings, opened on Solver assumptions: the defaults behind every plan, not this one. It appears only if you own the firm. [Settings overview](/guides/financial-planning/settings/overview) | Ask Hazel |
| **Feedback** | A thumbs-up and a thumbs-down on the plan itself. Covered below | Ask Hazel |
| **Regenerate** | Rebuilds the plan from the household's latest information | Financial Planning tab |
| **Open chat** | Takes you to the same plan in Ask Hazel, with the rest of the controls | Financial Planning tab |

The Financial Planning tab also carries the control that mutes the chime when a build finishes.

## Inside the document

**Blocks.** Every part of a section is a block: a narrative, key numbers, a chart, a table, a lever panel. Your firm's layout decides which appear and in what order. See [How Hazel visualizes data](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/how-hazel-visualizes-data).

**Figures.** A dotted underline means a source is recorded behind the figure: select it for where the number came from, how it was calculated, and the assumptions it rests on. Figures without it do not open. A figure inside a sentence is locked, with the tooltip "Kept in sync with the plan": change the number by changing the assumption behind it. See [Where numbers come from](/guides/financial-planning/your-data/where-numbers-come-from).

**Editing text in place.** Hover the plan's prose for a pencil at its top right: click it, type, then click away to stage the edit. See [Editing a plan directly](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/editing-a-plan-directly).

**Levers.** Dials you can move in front of a client. Figures tied to a lever move as you drag it, but nothing is stored and no version is created.

**Dragging goal cards.** Goal order changes nothing the plan calculates, so a drag stages as an edit for **Save** to commit. Where order does feed the numbers the grip is grayed out, so ask in chat, and a dial that needs Hazel to re-solve the plan renders no control at all. See [Levers and scenarios](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/levers-and-scenarios).

**Recommendations.** **Approve** and **Ignore** record your decision on the card and in the Decisions log straight away, and stage it to save with the rest of your changes.

**Questions Hazel asks you.** A new plan may carry a card with up to three assumptions Hazel had to make, each with a line saying what the answer changes. **Looks right** accepts the figure as it stands; change it and the button becomes **Use this**, which queues a recalculation. Where Hazel had nothing to go on the box reads **Unknown**, and **Looks right** stays grayed out until you type an answer.

**The Appendix.** The plan's full detail on one page: an **Applied settings** table naming every planning setting this version was built with, its value and the layer that set it, then one card per figure with its sources, arithmetic and assumptions.

**The disclaimer.** Your firm's client-facing footer, rendered at the bottom of the plan as written and carried into the PDF. Until someone at your firm writes one, nothing renders there.

## The plan settings panel

The sliders icon in Ask Hazel opens it, and the household **Financial Planning** tab has no such control. The panel shares the right edge with a figure's detail panel, so opening one closes the other.

Every row shows a value and a chip for the layer that set it: **Firm**, the persona by name, or **This plan**. Reset a saved override and the chip reads **Inherited** until the next recalculation settles whether the persona or the firm value takes over. A market row reads **Firm** at once, since a persona never carries market rows.

Under **Solver assumptions** you can change the success threshold, the reserve length and the Roth conversion strategy; under **Market assumptions**, the scenario this plan's projections draw from plus any rows your firm has adjusted. **Apply and replan** commits your overrides, **Discard changes** in the same footer drops them, and the commit arrives as a visible turn in the plan's chat. See [Solver assumptions](/guides/financial-planning/assumptions/solver-assumptions) for the fields and their ranges.

## The staging bar

Stage anything and a bar appears at the bottom of the plan, in both views, listing what is queued and offering **Save**, **Recalculate** and **Discard**. Nothing is saved until you press **Save**, and staged work does not survive a reload. See [Editing a plan directly](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/editing-a-plan-directly).

## Feedback

In Ask Hazel, thumbs-down opens a short form: pick what went wrong, add the detail. Each version takes one vote and it cannot be changed, so cast it on the version you reviewed. Feedback goes to Hazel's team, not into how your firm's plans get built; for that, edit your base template or a persona's instructions. See [Instructions](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/instructions).
