# Using the layout editor

> The Design layout editor: the rails, the canvas, Sample data, adding and removing, undo, zoom, and saving.

You open **Design layout** to set what a plan contains and in what order, so every plan Hazel builds from then on comes out the way your firm presents advice. Nothing you do here reaches a plan until you save.

Only firm owners can open a plan design. The header names the one you are editing: **Plan design**, then **Base template** or the persona's name.

## What is where

The left rail opens on **Outline**: your design as a list of sections, tabs and pieces, with a search box above it. Beside it, **Modules** is the library of everything you could add.

The canvas draws your design the way a plan is drawn. Click anything to select it, and its settings open in the **Editor** panel on the right. With nothing selected, that panel describes the whole design: its strictness mode, how many of Hazel's nineteen planning modules it uses, and **See what's left out**.

**Strictness** shows in the header as a badge but is set on the **Plan design** card in **Settings → Planning**. See [Strictness](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/strictness).

## What fills the canvas

The **Sample data** switch in the header decides. Off, the default, every piece draws itself with stand-in content, and a piece with no heading of its own names itself at the top of its card. On, Hazel fills the design with a made-up example household, so you can read it roughly the way a client will. A band across the top names that household and confirms it is fictional, never a real client, and on a persona the example fits the persona.

Zoom sits beside the switch: **Fit width**, the default, reflows the design to your window, and the percentages from 50% to 150% magnify one fixed layout instead.

## Working in it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add">
    In the **Modules** tab, find what you want and press **Add to plan**. Each card says where it will land, and Hazel selects it and scrolls to it.

    A module arrives set to **When it applies**, and the chevron beside the button adds it as always included instead.

    Single pieces, and bare sections and tabs, come from the **Building blocks** shelf at the foot of that tab, the one place you drag from.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reorder">
    In the **Outline**, hover a section or tab row and use the up and down arrows that appear. To reorder pieces inside a section, or move one into another section, drag it on the canvas.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Edit a piece">
    Select the piece and the **Editor** panel holds its settings: a **Heading**, **Instructions to Hazel** for that piece alone, **Leave out when**, **When it shows up**, and the rarely-touched extras under **Advanced**.

    **Leave out when** disappears once a piece is set to **Always**. See [Block settings](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/block-settings).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Remove">
    | To remove                      | How                                                                                                                                                                           |
    | ------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
    | One piece | Select it, then **Remove from layout** in the Editor panel. |
    | A whole module | The circle icon at the left of its row in the Outline, then **Remove from plan…**. Its other pieces go too, apart from any companion piece you have edited yourself. |
    | A section, or a tab you added | The trash icon that appears when you hover its row in the Outline. A section's icon grays out with an explanation once only one section is left; a design keeps at least one. |
    | A tab a module brought with it | No trash icon. Use the circle icon on that row and **Remove from plan…**, so the module's other pieces leave with it. |

    Every removal shows a message naming what went, with an **Undo**. If the module has been customized here, Hazel asks first whether to save your version to your firm's module library.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    The button at the top right reads **Saved** when there is nothing to save, **Save changes** when there is, and **Saving…** while it works. Until you press it, your work lives in this editor only: closing or refreshing the tab makes your browser ask first, and the **Planning settings** back link opens **Save your changes?**, offering **Keep editing**, **Discard and leave**, or **Save and leave**.

    A module you create with **New module…** in the Modules tab does not wait for this button. It joins your firm's module library at once.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Undo and redo

The two arrow buttons left of the save button, and Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z outside text fields. They cover everything you do on the canvas. Escape clears the selection.

The **Undo** inside a message covers that one change, and only while nothing else has changed since. After another edit, Hazel says so and points you back at the header arrow.

## When a save is blocked

A red band under the header saying your firm's stored planning settings could not be read means Hazel is holding the save back on purpose, so saving cannot replace your real settings with defaults. Reload **Settings → Planning** and open the editor again. If the band comes back, report it.

Any other failure arrives as a message under the header: a request that timed out, a persona somebody deleted in another tab, or another owner saving in the same instant. In that last case, press save again, and Hazel re-reads the latest settings and writes only this design onto them.

<Warning>
  Advisors who build plans cannot open or change your design, and saving writes only this one design, so it cannot touch an owner's work on a different persona. Two owners editing the **same** design will overwrite each other, so agree who has it first.
</Warning>

## Editing a persona that follows the base

If a persona has no design of its own, the editor opens the base template's design and the chip in the header reads **Follows base template**, and nothing changes for the persona while you look around. Press save and Hazel asks first whether to give that persona its own design. Say yes and the version on screen becomes the persona's own, stops picking up later changes to the base, and the chip reads **Customized from base**. Editing a chip on the **Plan design** card does the same at once, since that card saves as you go. See [Inheritance and re-syncing](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/inheritance).
