# Glossary

> Plain-English definitions for the words the Financial Planning Agent uses, from plans and versions to templates, strictness and assumptions.

You are about to build a plan or walk a client through one, so these words need to mean one thing.

## The plan

**[Plan](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/anatomy-of-a-plan).** The document Hazel builds for a household, which can hold several.

**Section.** A top-level part of a plan, listed under Plan sections.

**Appendix.** The plan's full detail, reached from the foot of that list.

**Tab.** A section inside another, shown as a tab of Getting there.

**[Block, chip](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/visual-reference).** One thing on the page, and a chip in a design.

**Plan orientation.** A short brief on what this plan concludes and why.

**Figure.** A number kept in sync with the plan's math. You cannot type over one.

**[Provenance and calculations](/guides/financial-planning/your-data/where-numbers-come-from).** The panel behind a figure: sources, methodology, assumptions.

**Confidence.** A column in that panel: **Verified**, **Unverified** or **Modeled**.

**[Lever](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/levers-and-scenarios).** A dial you move in the browser; it recalculates figures and saves nothing.

**Edit.** The chat view's top-bar button, which opens the conversation with Hazel about this plan. Not an editing mode, and the household's Financial Planning tab has none.

**[Staged changes](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/editing-a-plan-directly).** Edits made but not saved, counted in a bar at the bottom of the plan.

**Save.** Commits your staged edits as one new version.

**Recalculate.** Sends the staged changes that need the math run again.

**Discard.** Throws staged changes away. Saved versions are untouched.

**[Version](/guides/financial-planning/the-plan/versions-and-regenerating).** A saved state of the plan. Older ones stay readable, and read only.

**Regenerate.** Rebuilds the plan from the household's latest information. On the household's Financial Planning tab only.

**Status.** **Ready to review**: a version is there to open. **Draft in progress**: none yet.

## Firm configuration

**[Base template](/guides/financial-planning/settings/base-template).** Your firm's default plan. Every Client persona builds on it.

**[Client persona](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/overview).** A client type your firm serves. Hazel matches each household to the closest.

**[Plan design](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/overview).** The card showing a template's shape, block by block.

**[Design layout](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/using-the-editor).** The button that opens the full layout editor.

**[Module](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/modules).** A named piece of planning. Left out means no dedicated treatment of it, never a banned topic.

**[Instructions](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/instructions).** Your firm's guidance, in an ordered list: Hazel instructions on a template, Instructions to Hazel on a block.

**[Strictness](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/strictness).** How tightly a layout binds Hazel: **Exact**, **Guided** or **Flexible**. Flexible by default.

**[When it appears](/guides/financial-planning/plan-design/block-settings).** **Always**, or **When it applies**. Called When it shows up in the layout editor.

**Leave out when.** The one named condition under which a block may be dropped.

**Sample data.** The layout editor switch that fills a design with a made-up household.

**[Customized](/guides/financial-planning/settings/personas/inheritance).** A persona whose layout is its own copy, no longer following the base template.

**Re-sync from base.** Puts that layout back on the base template. A discard, not a merge.

**Plan settings.** The sliders panel in the chat view, for overriding a value on one plan. The household's Financial Planning tab has none.

## Assumptions

**[Solver assumptions](/guides/financial-planning/assumptions/solver-assumptions).** The inputs the math runs on: probability, fees and taxes, decumulation strategy.

**Probability of success.** How often a plan works across many modeled market outcomes. Displayed capped at ninety-nine percent unless your firm sets another ceiling.

**Monte Carlo simulations.** How many of those runs, one thousand by default, set firm-wide.

**Success threshold.** The probability a plan is judged against, ninety percent by default.

**[Market assumptions](/guides/financial-planning/assumptions/market-assumptions).** Return, volatility, inflation and tax figures, in one live set.

**Market scenario.** The Applied settings row naming the set a plan drew on.

**Planning assumptions.** Extra firm figures, a label and a value each, on the base template.

**[Guardrails](/guides/financial-planning/assumptions/guardrails).** Your firm's never-do rules. A persona can add one, never remove one.

**Withdrawal guardrails.** A different thing: the solver assumption that flexes spending as the portfolio moves.

**[Applied settings](/guides/financial-planning/your-data/where-numbers-come-from).** A plan's effective settings, in its Appendix, tagged **Firm**, **Persona** or **This plan**.

**Apply and replan.** Commits those overrides and recalculates, as a new version.

**Client disclaimer.** Your firm's footer, rendered as written under every plan and in the PDF.

## Data

**[Intelligent Client Profile](/guides/intelligent-client-profiles/overview/introduction).** A household's lasting facts, from emails, meetings, notes and documents.

**[Financial Plan document readiness](/guides/financial-planning/overview/getting-started).** The eight checks on a household's Financial Planning tab. Seven decide Ready to build.

**Prepare data.** Uploads documents you hold, then drafts a request email for the rest.

**Clarifying points.** The middle build step, where Hazel asks what would move the plan.
